Currently, I would like to pursue a degree in engineering and also study computer science. I feel that I'm a good candidate for college soccer because I'm a good student, I have good character, I work very hard, I exhibit good leadership and time management skills, I am self-motivated, and I play soccer at a very high level of competition.
My academics are very important to me. I am currently a senior in high school with an overall GPA of 5.6/5.0 and am studying a STEM curriculum which includes four AP classes and two Pre-AP classes. The difficulty of my courses has required me to work hard to keep up my grades. Due to COVID-19 during my freshman year, I studied remotely from home. This taught me that I needed to be self-motivated to study when teachers and classmates weren’t around to push me. I was able to adapt well to this new style of learning and excelled in my first year of high school. The past three years, I have been back in the classroom full-time. I am really enjoying being there in-person with my friends and am actively involved in extracurricular activities. Managing all of this along with my club training has taught me very valuable time management skills.
I started playing soccer when I was five years old and am now in my thirteenth year. This sport is my passion and I enjoy devoting a great deal of my time and effort into training, playing, and building team relationships. I’m fortunate to have had some great coaches to teach and mentor me while learning the game. As a result, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to some high-caliber teams over the years. I played two years in the USYS STYSA State Classic League - the most competitive South Texas league for top-caliber Division I teams. I was appointed Captain of one of those teams and learned how leadership and comradery could help bring the team together – leading us to be ranked third in the state. I spent three years in the USYS Frontier Conference - a Premier I Division tier which provided the highest level of competition within an Oklahoma, North Texas and South Texas multi-state division. And I have been particularly blessed these past three years - having been selected to play for a very high caliber club team in the US Club Soccer ECNL, having been selected for my third year to represent South Texas on the ODP state team, and having been selected as a starting Varsity player and Captain for my high school where we were the district champions for the fourth year in a row and progressed to the Regional Semifinals in the State Playoffs this year.
The highlight of last year was having the opportunity to travel with my ODP team to Germany over spring break and train with the Dortmund Academy. It was my first chance to travel outside of the US and experience a different culture. On this trip, I learned so many new things there and developed new skills that I most likely wouldn’t have been able to learn here. On top of the training, the atmosphere was amazing. I was able to go to one of the professional Borussia Dortmund games, and it was so inspirational that it gave me a new drive to work towards becoming a better player. It was also such a great experience because we were able to play some of the academies that were from Germany. They played at a very fast pace and were able to move the ball really well, but still we were able to keep up with them and perform. And at the end of the games, I was able to receive some of their contact information and am able to talk to them even though I’m back in the US. This year, I was invited by my ODP team to join them on a training tour to Turin and Milan. This was also an amazing and inspirational experience. While there, we had three games against hard competition and were able to win two of the three. Not only were the games an incredible experience, but I really learned a lot with the trainings we had with the Turin Academy.
Learning opportunities such as these have really showed me how setting goals and working hard to accomplish them can be rewarded. I am really looking forward to continuing my education in college, being able to have new experiences, travel, meet new people – but most importantly, being able to continue playing the game I love.
