Greetings coaches!
I love soccer with an unbelievably strong passion. I watch soccer videos every day, highlights of some of my favorite players, like Wayne Rooney, Clint Dempsey and David Villa. I notice that the higher you go in the levels of soccer, and really every sport, the higher the passion for the game is. That is why I believe I want to play college soccer: my passion is second to none. I know the story of the 1994 round of 16 match between Brazil and USA, the unfortunate game that knocked the US out of their very own tournament. This same tournament featured Diana Ross's opening ceremony penalty fail. At the end of the tournament, Roberto Baggio, clearly the best player in the tournament, had a worse penalty than Diana Ross, and this lost the World Cup for Italy! Anyway, the score of that round of 16 was 1-0 to Brazil, a 74th minute close-range finish from Brazilian striker Bebeto the decider. I could go on and on for days about details of the history of soccer, as I simply love this sport. My ultimate dream is to play for a team and represent a school that I love, that has a system of play that I love, and ultimately believes in me and competes for major success, year in, year out. The reason why I love soccer is the way that it originally made me feel. Every time I kick a ball, it reminds me of watching the 2014 world cup with my family. I believe that it is the best world cup ever, even better than the prestigious 1970 World Cup in Mexico (part of that is probably because I was not alive for that tournament). The moment that I knew I loved soccer was when I watched Clint Dempsey score a goal in less than a minute against Ghana in the USA's opening game. I knew a little bit about Dempsey, I knew that he was a Seattle Sounders player, but I didn't know about his career previously, how a kid from the small town of Nacogdoches, Texas rose to fame in the MLS, and went on to have a European career that included Premier League sides like Fulham and Tottenham, and score memorable goals like the iconic chip in the Europa League and the goal that I previously mentioned against Ghana. Since that moment, I have spent day after day, kick after kick, in my backyard, hoping that one day I can grace the hierarchy of professional soccer like him.
In terms of academics, I am a perfectionist, especially in math, and I completed 10 hours of community service last semester for National Junior Honor Society. I strive for success in all of my classes, and have a goal of having a 4.0 GPA in high school and being valedictorian. I pride myself on doing my best, always, in every avenue of life. My leadership teacher, who I have worked with as an ASB Executive Officer for 2 years (7th and 8th grade), shared this with my parents: "Max has so much influence on others, because they know he will always do what is right. And, unfortunately, being motivated, highly competitive in sports and academically driven puts him in a very isolating situation. As he gets into high school, his circle will expand. He will find others with the same drive. He has every right to be arrogant, but he isn't. He could easily put others down, but he doesn't. I admire him so much." I strive in every aspect of my life to treat everyone with dignity and respect they deserve.
In addition to that, my character is derived upon being as gracious in defeat as I am in victory, I maintain composure and a steady head in pressure situations, and I consistently give as much effort as I possibly can in just about everything I do. In athletics, I am also a passionate basketball player, and I hope to play varsity high school basketball. I am a point guard who strives to involve others, play hard, tough and fair, and leave it all on the court, exactly what I do on the pitch. As much as I like playing basketball, soccer will always be my #1 sport. I have spent 8 years playing select soccer for MRFC (Mt. Rainier Football Club), the club that has made me lifelong friendships and taken me places like Utah, California and Florida. I always do my best with an all-or-nothing attitude: I give my best, always try to make the right play, include my teammates and have a positive attitude, because I believe that is all that you can control. I am hungry and driven to bring success to a program, make friends and inspire success at whatever college I end up at. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope to come into contact with you soon!
Sincerely, Max Argo
