My parents have influenced my life in so many ways. I believe that without their support, I never would have developed the qualities that I have today. I have grown up learning that you should never give up, and that achieving success will always have to come through hard work and discipline. When I was a freshman in high school, I was planning on ending my age group career on a high note, attempting to defend my state titles from previous years. Unfortunately, with only a couple months left until the state championship, my appendix ruptured, and I later developed an abscess. I was stuck in the hospital for a month thinking that my season was over.
When I was finally allowed to leave the hospital, it would be another two weeks before I was able to get back into the pool and start to swim again. It was heartbreaking knowing that my last year swimming age group would never be as great as I had planned. However, through the support of my friends and family, I was able to find a second wind. I trained harder than I ever had before, even going for extra time in the pool outside of practice. Eventually, the state meet came around, and with only one month of training behind me, I was able to win the 1000 and the 1650 freestyle, and come in 3rd in the 500. It is because of the qualities I developed prior to my hospital stay that I was able to make my come back. I plan to take these same qualities to the program that I swim for. I would love for to find a college that can help me improve my education, as well as assist me in improving in my athletic career. I believe my dedication, discipline, and perseverance would make me a great fit for any swim program.
