Personal Statement
At the age of 9, I started swimming lessons and I would stay to watch the swim team practice. I improved enough to join the team at the beginning of the next session and at 11 I had a goal to qualify for the Junior Olympics. I qualified and swam a personal best of more than 6 seconds to win the 200 freestyle.
I joined the High School Varsity swim team as a freshman and chose to put my black-belt in karate aside. I put all my time, effort and passion into swimming and quickly fell in love with it.
Last year I qualified for Sectionals and States, placing 6th in the 200 freestyle at Sectionals. I was named a League All Star both Freshman and Sophomore years.
Swimming has taught me many things about life. Not only the obvious hard work and consistency, but also lessons about friendships, loss and moving forward. The time in the pool and with my teammates has carried me through changing high schools, swim teams and finding a new normal with Covid-19.
Academically, remote learning has given me a chance to step back and see a bigger picture. I am enjoying two honors classes this semester, Chemistry and Pre-Calculus. I have goals for swimming, and I am now applying the same concept to my grades.
Swimming in college is important to me. I approach a school by researching its academics, setting and the swim team. It is my hope to find a great fit in all areas. I like to take instruction, set goals, and work hard.
