I am entering my sixth season of competitive club swimming and I am very excited for another great year. I specialize in the 1500 metre Freestyle as well and the 800 and 400 Free. I love to work hard and I try to never miss practice. I love to race and compete and there is no better feeling in the world than finishing and knowing you left it all in the pool.
I began competitive swimming because I had taken swimming lessons when we lived in Australia and loved the water. When we moved back to Canada in 2009, I kept swimming but was also playing hockey (because that is what we do here in Canada). In 2010 I made the difficult decision to leave hockey and focus on swimming competitively and have never regretted the decision. Although swimming and school takes up a large part of my time, I like to participate in other sports including spending time at the local pond and playing hockey with my friends. For the last two years, I have competed for my school’s Cross Country team. In 2014, the Junior varsity team that I was a member finished third at the Provincial (State) Championships. In the past 12 months I have also competed in 10 km road racing and Triathlon and have achieved great results that I am proud of, (10 km = 37.04 (112th out of over 10,000 runners) and won the 19 and Under category in my first Olympic Distance Triathlon). I do these other sports and races for reasons beyond staying in shape. I love to compete and push myself. This summer I have been employed as a Beach Lifeguard (youngest member on City staff) and participate on the Lifeguard Sports team and will be participating in the Canadian Lifeguarding Championships in August 2015.
Participating in sport has increased my self-confidence in my life. I understand that hard work leads to concrete results. I believe that the work you put in to anything can lead to success as much as the work you do not do can lead to disappointment. I have learned also that you need lots of support to be successful in sport or anything else. My family and friends have been that support for me everyday.
In school I like the sciences, math and physical education. This past year, I achieved Honor Roll and I plan to continue to work hard at school to achieve the best grades possible. I want to continue swimming into my college years because it is an amazing sport and I think I still have lots of opportunity to learn, grow and improve in the pool. I am looking for an opportunity to attend a school that can offer great programs in Kinesiology and Exercise Science and that also has a fantastic swim program with great coaching in the longer distances. I am looking for a place where I can grow as not only a swimmer but also as a scholar and as a person.
