My name is Andrew Roman. I started swimming competitively when I was 6 years old, but my parents tell me that I learned how to swim before I could walk. When I was 8, I swam for a summer swim team and finished 4th in the 50 and 100 free in that year's Texas state championships. I started club swimming when I was 9, first with Texas Ford Aquatics. I've been swimming for Coach Sean on the Select Team of Aquatic Racers for the past 4 years. I took a short break from swimming when I was 11 to concentrate on my school work. I started back when I was 12, in 7th grade. A few weeks after being in the pool, I suffered from a severe concussion after I was hit in the head with a soccer ball, fell to the ground, and hit my head on a rock during PE. I was under the care of great concussion doctors and specialists, and it took almost 2 years to fully recover. I've really only been back in swimming for a little over 2 years.
I've made great progress over the past 2 years. I feel like I'm starting on a path to reach my full potential. About one year ago, I was 5'1" tall and weighed 95 pounds. Today, I'm 5'11" and weigh nearly 130. I swim 2 hour practices 5 days a week, lift weights in the gym 3 days a week, and attend dry land before wet practices. Even when I was smaller than other kids in my age group, I kept up with them by practicing hard on my form and conditioning. I can't wait to see what I can do now that I'm catching up with the bigger kids in height and weight. I've never swam in a meet fully tapered, shaved, and with a tech suit. Even with COVID-19, we have been practicing since June. We have a meets in September and October, and for the October meet I'll finally get to wear my tech suit. I'm really looking forward to this meet!
Looking forward to the next few years, I'm going to work hard to keep my GPA at a 3.7 or higher. My goal for my Junior year is to make a 4.0. I'm studying for SATs, which I'll take in April or May of next year. For swimming this year, my goal is to reach for AAA times in my events while I continue to practice hard, work on drylands, and continue to grow and put on weight. Also, I'm going to pursue being recruited by a Division 1 school. My dream is attend a Division 1 school, competitively swim and help my team win it's meets, and study pre-med. I would like to eventually help kids who have concussions like the one I had, and help them get back on their feet and on with their lives after they had a head injury. I would like to be an example and show that having and recovering from a concussion means you can be successful in academics and a great swimmer.
