My name is Kaleb Kashinejad, and I’m a swimmer.
I love the sport of swimming and what I can achieve in the water. If it’s just myself, I’m racing against the clock, and I strive to beat it. If I’m racing against someone else, I know I can beat them – either mentally or physically. In practice, I think about my flip turns, how many underwater kicks I need to take, and where I am against my pace. In competition, my mind is much quieter, thinking about how strong my arms are pulling or when I need to breathe. I like the team – individually and as a unit. I’m coachable – and I coach. I teach swimming at both my local pool and to underprivileged kids.
I’m an entrepreneur. I created and run a successful small business, a lawn care company. I like the meditative nature of the work, and I like the work itself. It’s physically hard, and I like the results I can create. There’s another reason, but I’ll get to that in a minute. I’ve always been drawn to hard work, and my mom says I have ‘grit’. That makes sense, because I come from a gritty family, and they’ve always supported me in my athletics as well as my academics. I have a heavy swim training load and am fortunate to go to a very good public school.
I’m a student, drawn to the sciences. I ultimately want to practice in and run my own chiropractic or physiotherapy company. I need an academic program that has strong science and business offerings. I also want a school that cares about swimming and cares about its swimmers.
Finally, I’m the second of two sons, the baby of the family. But I’m the one who doesn’t have Autism, so that means my future will look different than that of other younger sons. My brother loves water, but he’s not a swimmer. I created my business to give him an opportunity to work at something he likes to do, but he’s not an entrepreneur. He goes to school and is a student in a special class at the same school as me, but his future opportunities will look very different than mine. I’ve always done my best to make sure he’s safe, understood, and admired for all he can do. He’s challenging and amazing and inspiring, and I really wish he could be a swimmer.
