My name is Chris DeCamp and I became serious about tennis in Jr. High. Now, weighing 155 pounds and at 6’2”, I am constantly developing my competitive game. The best part of my game is my forehand and my serve. I also have a one handed back hand. My game revolves around a serve-forehand 1-2 punch on my service games, and on my return games, it revolves around being aggressive off the 2nd serve return. I love to attack the net and am always looking to put fore-court pressure on my opponent.
I became the Captain of my high school tennis team in my sophomore year and I continue to be their number one singles player. As Captain, I demonstrate a good work ethic, help new players develop their strokes and represent the ideals of my school during competition. Last year I received the ‘Most Valued Player Award’ and the ‘League All Star Award’ and finished the season 7-6.
I have played a few USTA tournaments, but plan on playing many more. Before I enjoyed any success in USTA tournaments, I had to rigorously improve my game, my fitness, and my mentality. I spent hours on court working on my technique with my coach, and spent hours in my basement doing footwork and agility drills using cones, my rope ladder, and my jump rope. However, the work I put in on and off the court wouldn’t give me an advantage if I lost my head every time I was in a losing position in a match. I have really started to understand how important the mental game is in tennis. I have been working with a Boston University sports psychologist to help me with my post match-evaluation, between point routine, and just building a much better competitive mindset. My current USTA record is 5-12 and my current ranking in New England is 197
My long term goal is to become a physician. Therefore, I will look at any school in any state, city or suburb that provides a course of study that will allow me to enter medical school later, and that has a NCAA DIII or DII tennis team. I hope to play from my freshman year on and help the team with my grit and determination, and I will benefit from the experience of participating in a tennis team at the collegiate level.
