Daniel Linehan '16 Recruiting Profile

Hello, my name is Daniel Linehan. I am a high school athlete looking to take my career in track to the next level. I was first introduced to track in the winter season of my freshman year, purely to stay in shape in between seasons. However, once I joined the team, my plans quickly changed. I understand that it is important to be as versatile as possible, especially in a sport such as track.  For example, I started off my career solely as a sprinter (my longest race being the 300m); however, I realized through experimenting and by trying out different events, that I was more of a mid-distance sprinter. I would have never realized the extent of my capabilities had I not opted to try different events. I think the fact that I am a multi-sport athlete helps me be versatile and open to suggestions. I’ve competed in baseball,  basketball,  football, gaelic football, golf, soccer, and swimming.  In all, I have always pushed my capabilities to the maximum and track is no exception. I understand that being as versatile as possible will allow me to improve tremendously in all aspects of life.

During my freshman year, I tore my labrum in my right hip which was a major obstacle that I had to overcome. Although it was a serious injury that caused me to undergo orthopedic surgery, I did not let it keep me down. I stayed positive as I went through physical therapy and now am back to running at faster times than before. My coaches awarded me the position of captain  in the winter season of my junior year, and I will be keeping this position for the remainder of my high school career. My coaches told me that they chose me as captain due to my dedication to running, how I lead by example, and how willing I am to do what’s best for the team in order for us to win meets.

Although athletics are a defining factor in determining what college I would like to attend, they are not the most important. My academics are the most important factor in my decision. I hope to attend a college that has well established engineering facilities. I’ve always been a hands on type of guy with strengths in math and science, so engineering is the perfect fit for me.

           Teamwork and leadership extends beyond the field and classroom.  I am a part of the youth ministry at my church as an altar server and also as a volunteer with a foundation called Al’s Angels. The goal of the foundation is to assist local families in need by providing non-perishable food items and other necessities, particularly around the holidays. I volunteer with Al’s Angels regularly to help to assemble these care packages and distribute, them around the area    

My goals for college are to further my athletic abilities as well as to expand my knowledge of my potential major, engineering. I want to become a better athlete, but at the same time I want to become an overall more well rounded person who will be ready for the real world. I am hard working, dedicated, strong, eager to try new things, and passionate- which I feel are key assets that make me a good fit for your school.
