Aloha! My name is Colin Shimabukuro and I'm a cross country and middle-distance track runner currently enrolled at Moanalua High School on the island of O'ahu.
Over the years, I have learned that running is not only a sport but a lifestyle. It has taught me that everything we do as athletes have consequences and the work we put into our sport reflects on and off the track. Growing up, my parents and family instilled in me the values of grit, sacrifice, risk-taking, trust, and teamwork. But also being responsible, smart, and taking advantage of my opportunities. Living in Hawaii, I have experienced the beauty of the diversity in the people here, and how we celebrate our similarities and differences. Knowing that the pain and time will be worth it, in the end, is what drives me to show up and show out to every workout. I always run with a chip on my shoulder knowing that I am going to work harder and give more effort than my opponents. As a distance runner, this sport has taught me to embrace the pain because it can only grow me as an athlete.
This year, as a junior, I qualified for states for cross country and placed 18th. I ended my season with a personal best of 18:04. For outdoor track, my current PRs are 4:19 (1500), 2:06 (800), and 9:40 (3000). This senior year, I ran a new PR of 17:19.
I hope to continue my education after high school, studying environmental science and conservation to help the Earth. I am hoping to build a foundation for my future that will set me up for success and happiness. I look forward to the journey ahead as I continue to grow as a person and an athlete.
