Personal Statement
“Running allows me to set my mind free. Nothing seems impossible. Nothing unattainable.” - Kara Goucher.
My name is Christian (Hume) Carrington. I currently attend Island School, a competitive college preparatory school on the island of Kauai. My family moved to Kauai in 2019 from the Oregon Coast. Running is part of the culture of my family. I started running at a very young age in local races. In 2017, I was fortunate enough to run in the Junior Olympics with national standing and traveled to Florida and Seattle with the team.
The move from a rural town in Oregon to Hawaii was exciting but challenging. The process of transferring involved establishing a new friends group and learning a new culture. In Oregon, I attended a public high school my freshman year running cross country, placing 2nd overall in the 4A-3 Oregon West Conference JV Championships. I excelled in honors classes, finishing the year with a 3.75 GPA. I also played baritone saxophone in several high school bands and piano as a side hobby. By Spring, my family had decided to make the transition to Hawaii. I found Island School to be extremely challenging. My class transitions were dramatic and my GPA dropped. As Island School did not have a band program, I continued to play music with the community college band and the competitive all-island marching band. With hard work, my GPA started to climb, however, with the closing of the schools in March due to COVID-19 and grades distributed as pass/fail, I do not currently have a competitive GPA. As a junior taking physics and college algebra as well as other core classes, my goal is to hold a 3.5 GPA or higher by the end of my junior year. Luckily, Island School will be holding fulltime face-to-face classes.
My interest in college includes biological sciences and technology. Both of these are growing fields and I'm hoping to attend a university that supports these types of programs. I am willing to work hard academically while participating in a strong running team. I am also interested in schools that have music programs.
With the cancelation of cross country this year, I will continue to strive for better running times, running virtual races, and with other motivated teammates. I'm lucky to have a good coach who pushes me to excel and a demanding scholastic program.
