I began running in junior high with little knowledge of the sport of distance running. I was lucky to have met my coach, Mr. John O’Malley, and my cross country teammates. Through my coach and teammates, I have gained the skills and experience needed to become a great runner. Coach O’Malley has always showed me the importance of competition, but not at the expanse of sportsmanship. He has encouraged me to be a leader of the future. As I had a senior runner when I started, who I quickly looked up to and learned how to have the confidence needed in myself and my skills, I too will in turn be that example for future runners and teammates. I have come to realize the importance of teamwork, even in an individual sport like cross country and track. All of these skills not only benefit me as a runner and teammate, but will carry through in my academics and future professional accomplishments. I want to continue be part of a team that will compete for the team and not only for themselves.
