Personal Statement

Hi, I am Austin Baker and I view myself as a student of the sport of running. Ever since I have started taking this sport in a serious manner, I have been obsessed with trying to better myself as an athlete in any way. Whether its plyometric, long runs, or just visualizing a race, I do it because I truly love this sport. Running is such a raw sport where hard work, a good attitude, and a bit of talent define your potential to be the best. That’s why I love this great sport. Running has got me new friends, physically fit, and a new outlook on how to approach things. As where once I would look for the easiest way out, now what running has taught me is to always do things the right way whether its easy or not. Over the past year and a half I believe I have grown greatly as a runner and a person. My sophomore year of cross country I was the number seven runner on the team for the entire year. Our varsity team was all sophomores and no one graduated that was in the top seven. After the season had ended I made a decision that I didn’t want to be average anymore and wanted to pursue this sport at the next level. This fueled the fire for a very successful track season in my eyes. The previous year I had a P.R. of 2:35 for the 800m race(the only distance I ran). Determined and hungry, I set the bar high for myself and set a goal for a sub five minute effort over 1600 meters. Mid way through the season I hit this mark and ever since then I continue to set the bar high to give me something to reach for. The next cross country season I put in a good summer of hard (but enjoyable) miles, and I moved all the way up to be Auburn's number one runner on the varsity squad. Even though I love to compete and love to work hard, I see myself as an athlete that brings a smile and has fun with it. I love joking around and laughing with my teammates, but I also know when its time to get serious and down to work. I want to take my athletic and academics to the next level, to compete in the classroom and on the track.

  • NXR Midwest
  • 11/13/16 to 11/13/16
  • 3 Mile split 16:33. Just went to Terre Haute to enjoy the NXR experience but wasn't looking to run fast. I ended up running fairly decent with little training. I went out reasonable and kept moving up throughout the race. I ended up having a great time ended my cross season. Already excited for track since I get to start running higher mileage.

  • Today I went for it, with no regrets. My time doesn't represent the effort I gave today. My goal today was to go out at state qualifying pace and do my best to hang. I didnt have it today. I made the decision I would go out hard and hang either way. Today I hung until I the wheels completely fell off. I went out in 5:14 and fell off pace at 1.7 then came through 2 miles in 11 flat. I gave it my all, so today I don't regret my time or my plan. I didn't have a complete team with me so I was alright with going out hard and coming back completely dead if it came to that. The last mile my body started shutting down and I was doing everything in my power just to make it back to the finish. Ran it with heart so I can't be upset.

  • I like to be as transparent as possible. Went out in 5:14 (goal was sub 16), and didn't have it. I'm beginning to go through some physical burnout symptoms. I'm going to be taking it easy for a bit, our coach doesn't believe in recovery days. Coach has us doing 20 mpw ( I try to do more on my own but coach calls them "junk miles". I think it shows the team is starting to burn out as all of our times and progressively getting slower. We have around 20 meets a year because coach believes the only way to get faster is to do repeats and race everyday. I'm going to try to take this week easy and salvage the rest of the season and try to make it to the state meet! 17:20, felt terrible.
  • Camp/Event
  • Franklin Classic - 5th place
  • 9/20/16 to 9/20/16
  • First meet being relatively fresh since the Rochester Invite. Franklin course is very hilly with bad footing, nobody runs fast times. Got out in 5:35 in the first mile, which put me in about 15th. Throughout the race I kept working up throughout the race and finished fifth. I ran a course PR and was in the mid to low 17 minute range.
  • Camp/Event
  • First Meet getting after it
  • 9/03/16 to 9/03/16
  • Went out hard felt comfortable for the first 1.5 mile in the lead pack then dropped off (Mile 1 5:13), came in at 17 min on a 3 mile with a fairly course
  • Camp/Event
  • Jacksonville Invite 16:03
  • Good bounce back from Springfield Invite. Soft and wet course went 16:03 for 8th. Looking for sub 16 on the 2.94 course but happy with the results. 5th as a team
  • Camp/Event
  • Conference- 7th
  • Tough day but came away with all-conference status!
