I thrive on problem-solving, meeting challenges, and achieving goals. I like working together with classmates and teammates to define the roles that will allow each of them to make the greatest impact.
Academically I enjoy problem-solving, so the intricate nature of math and the sciences with the mental challenges involved make sense to me. I like to push myself in class and in training. When I want to improve, I talk with my teachers or coaches asking for clarification, explanation, and advice. I try to work harder, spend more time focusing on the issue, and then go the extra mile to reach the goal.
I want to do well, to succeed and to achieve my goals. When competing in individual sports like skiing and running, I enjoy pushing myself to find the limits of my ability and then to find a coach or mentor to figure out how to further improve. I set a very high bar for myself; and by doing so, I encourage my teammates to reach higher for themselves as well. The phrase “I can’t” or “I won’t” is not part of my vocabulary because it just means that I don’t want to try anymore, and that is just not the energy that I want to bring anywhere.
I picked up running as an interest in eighth grade and joined the school cross country team as a freshman. It provided a sport that I could throw my head into and really push myself. Some of my teammates have said that “You (Myself) know it’s all on you” because I know that together if we push harder to get better the team will feel the benefits. That athleticism and the leadership I displayed led to being named team MVP in both my freshman and sophomore years.
I have been on skis since my third birthday, but it wasn’t until four years ago that I joined the travel race team. I have qualified for States each year and for Eastern’s the past three years. This year I was one of the top 16 boys in my age group in New York State.
At the age of seven, I followed my big brother into the wilds of Algonquin Park in Ontario, Canada to a tripping camp called Pathfinder. I spend the summer paddling, portaging, and camping. Last year, during my 8th year at camp, I took a 30+ day whitewater canoeing trip beginning in northern Canada and ending up in Hudson Bay.
I demonstrate leadership in many areas of my academic and athletic pursuits. Teachers have commented on my ability to sit back in class discussions and listen, then to come out with a concise few sentences that sum up the whole topic.
