As soon as I began competing in track and field as a middle schooler, I knew that it would soon become my favorite sport. Throughout my time as a track athlete, I have never once fallen out of love with it. The idea of competing with others in order to show who the better athlete is simply captivates me. Knowing that my performance can also propel my team to a victory in meets also provides another competitive edge to the sport. At my core, I am a competitor and have an unwavering desire to succeed, and track and field is where I am able to best show this.
Despite this, my path to success in the sport was not an easy one. I have faced several injuries over my high school career that massively changed my athletic performances, the most notable being a severe concussion I suffered in my sophomore year. Following this traumatic blow, I lost 20 pounds and was kept out of school for weeks. Even by the end of spring, I was never able to get back of the levels of success that I had experienced in my freshman year. Some of my grades even began to slip during my sophomore year. Many would have quit or given up at this point, but instead, I promised to myself that I would not stop working until I was better than I had ever been. My determination and hunger for success is what has allowed me to regain my confidence and surpass several of my personal bests in my junior season. Similarly, my grades also recovered as I completed arguably my best academic year as a high schooler. As a student and athlete, this motor for achievement is what will propel me past other student-athletes. I have faced much controversy during my three years in high school, and despite all of the setbacks, I have still come out on top time and time again.
