I fell in love with running for all the usual reasons: the invincible feeling of flying, the battle of the psychological with the physiological, the lessons of discipline and hard work, the camaraderie of shared struggle. But I've learned more from injury than from fervent competition. My body has never been on board with the physical demands of this sport. I'm built like a running back, not a marathoner. By now it's a running joke how often I've injured myself—twenty times, thirty? Over four years, I've spent more time cross-training on the elliptical, watching my teammates compete, than I have racing alongside them. But I'd have it no other way. Injury taught me humility; it developed my ability to lead. I'm not the star runner I once was, so I now lead not by physical prowess, but as an example of patience and perseverance, a relentless passion for this sport.
