Participating in sports is a fun way to learn valuable lessons that are helpful throughout life. Roger Staubach said, “Winning isn’t getting ahead of others, it’s getting ahead of yourself.” I’ve found this to be true as a three-sport athlete competing in football and outdoor track at my high school and indoor track as part of an elite-level club. In track, if I train and focus on giving my best effort, then I usually run better times, which also results in placing higher. In football, arguably the most important thing I can do for my team is to play my position or do my job to the best of my ability. I’ve learned how important every moment on the field is, and these experiences shape the way I think, work, and lead.
Ernie Davis said, “Football is just a game. What matters is what you play for.” I play to become a better person, help others improve, share experiences, and create memories with my friends, teammates, coaches, and my community. What happens on the scoreboard is important, but I’m also driven by other accomplishments along the way. It’s about more than celebrating an individual win or coping with a loss, whether we come out on top or fall short, I’m proud to play the game I love alongside my friends. Both football and track have taught me how to face challenges, stay focused under pressure, and lead by example. I am open to and would enjoy competing in either or both sports if advantageous.
Finally, I live in a military household where being well-rounded and understanding the importance of other perspectives is promoted. I enjoy sports for all the reasons described, but I also hope to use sports to help obtain a college education in an environment where I can learn from others with different backgrounds. I haven’t completely narrowed down a major from my academic interests, but I am leaning towards Sports Management, Media and Marketing, Performance Psychology and Coaching, or Data Analytics. With all that in mind, I think I’m ready to take the next step, not just because I want to keep playing, but because I’m ready to keep growing. I believe I can bring a great mindset, energy, and heart to a college program looking for more than just a good player, but also a great teammate and a dedicated competitor.
