It would be the highest achievement for me to be accepted to the college of my choice and to be able to compete in volleyball. Since I have dedicated myself to scholarship and sportsmanship I believe that never settling is at my foundation. Focusing on a goal of college acceptance and competing in volleyball forces me to push myself in the classroom and on the court.
Having supportive parents that are both teachers has taught me the importance of education. Throughout my academic career I have earned high marks. I attended Valley Middle School and achieved a 4.0 GPA and in my 8th grade year was awarded a distinction for my success as a Spanish I student. In high school I have continued to work toward the best grades possible and have taken honors classes in English, Math and History. I have kept busy during the summer and took on the challenge of enrolling in an online U.S. History course at Mira Costa Community College and earned an A. Also, I am thoroughly enjoying Human Body Systems and could see myself working in the field of Biomed. I plan on taking Advanced Placement courses in my junior and senior years.
While taking school very serious I also have been able to be a service to my community by volunteering to coach youth basketball teams through Carlsbad Parks and Recreation. Being a volunteer coach helped me to hone my communication skills and allowed me to use my leadership skills. Not only have I volunteered as a coach but I have also helped out with local trails by Sage Creek High School. I have helped to mend fences along the borders so that visitors to Calavera Lake are able to be safe while enjoying the outdoors.
As a volunteer youth basketball coach I was able to draw on my athletic experience to help out the team. Being part of a team in sports has taught me a lot. I have learned what it takes to be a good team member as well as a leader. I have played baseball, basketball and volleyball on organized teams and have been called upon to step up and be a leader on each of the teams. Leading a team has taught me the importance of being a good communicator and leading by example.
It is vitally important to lead by example, if you want your team to perform at the highest level. With my coaching and playing experience I hold my players and the teammates around me to a high level. I learned that it is better to be an hour early than a minute late. I see punctuality as a basic foundation of my character. If you want your players, and teammates to be on-time then you must be on time, all the time. Another character trait I hold in high regard is honesty. Being truthful is critical to being a good person. I truly believe that honesty is the best policy.
I take being a student-athlete very serious. I am 6 feet 4 inches tall and I have an 8 feet 6 inches vertical standing reach. I also have a 10 feet 6 inches approach jump. Throughout my athletic career I have competed and won at the highest level. I have been on both baseball and basketball teams that have won city championships. Just over two years ago I took up volleyball. During my first year in high school our freshman team did extremely well. Many of the members of the team went on to form the first club team I played on at SoCal Volleyball Club. I earned a roster spot on SoCal’s 15U team and was able to compete in the Junior Nationals (Junior Olympics) in Dallas. Competing at the highest level helped me to set my sights on playing varsity volleyball my sophomore season. I made the varsity team in 2016 and our team had amazing success – winning the San Diego Section Division II championship and then topping that with the victory in the Division III State Championship in Huntington Beach. I have worked extremely hard to be successful in the classroom and on the court. I look forward to the challenges ahead and the hard work it will take to become a college athlete.
