My name is Mike Monczewski and I would like to introduce myself, I am 17 years old and just finished my junior year at Cherry Hill High School East. My vertical is 10’11’’and I was just recently nominated as captain for this upcoming season at our end of year banquet. However, this is not my first time being a team captain; I was also the captain of the junior varsity team last year. Currently, I am 6’4’’ and 170 pounds and I am still growing, not only physically and mentally, but also in skill level and ability. This past school season I earned myself 168 kills in 21 games on the season and 2nd team all-conference. This year I plan on making 1st team all-conference and 1st team all-state.
I don't only play school volleyball, but I am also a part of the South Jersey Volleyball Club. This past club season I was on the 17 elite team, where we played in large tournaments such as the Penn State tournament. Club volleyball has played a huge role in my development not only as a player but it has also molded me into the person I am today.
Volleyball is an amazing sport and I would truly be honored to have the opportunity to represent a college and play for their team. At the beginning of my sophomore year at Cherry Hill East, a coach recommended that I try out for the volleyball team given my athletic abilities and after I tried out, I decided to change sports from basketball to volleyball. After the first couple of weeks of playing on the junior varsity team, my coaches moved me up to the varsity team. Then, within the next couple of days, I earned a starting spot on the team at the outside position, ending the season with an 11-5 record. As the season progressed, I was inspired by my coaches and my team. My commitment and determination was to become one of the best players in the state within the next couple of years.
Since the beginning of my sophomore year, I have matured and grown as a leader, a player and a person. Because of the game of volleyball, I have become more of an understanding person and I embrace the concept of teamwork. Although I didn't start playing volleyball until my sophomore year, I feel I am a natural at the sport; I truly have a passion for the game. My coaches have even told me numerous times that I look like a player that has been playing much longer than I actually have.
I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read my personal statement, and good luck in the upcoming volleyball season.
