Personal Statement

My name is Sophia Butt. Sophi, Soph, Soso, or Ia; yep, I’ve had all these nicknames. I am a MIF and a RHP, a lefty hitter and slapper. I am class of 2025. I live in Vail, Arizona and I am a straight A student. I enjoy drawing and playing the flute and piano. I have recently moved from Maryland to Arizona during the pandemic. Maryland is where I started to play softball at age 10, but Arizona is where I am learning to be so much better.

I am a military child who has lived in several places stateside and overseas. Growing up in a military family I’ve learned to be resilient and adapt to new places and people. I believe that I am determined and dedicated.  My inner drive pushes me to strive to be the best that I can be, yet I am open to still learn more. Every team I play for gets 100% effort from me as a player and a teammate; whether it be in a pitching or hitting lesson, practice, scrimmage, tournament, showcase, or helping a teammate be her best.

My athletic goal is to continue to play softball in college at the highest level I can. My academic goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in either kinesiology, physical therapy, or graphic design, interior design. My ultimate goal would be to find a college where I can pursue both my athletic and academic goals.

  • 03/21/2021 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Phoenix , AZ Sophia continues to show improvements in her softball abilities on the field. At 2B, defensive abilities are now solid as she displays smooth / fluid actions. Feet are aggressive as she attacks balls and plays through with her body. Glove action is soft and presents well out front. She showed off her athletic abilities on her feeds / turn of the double play. Range will increase as she improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate she continues to shine through a squared setup. Hands are quick (60 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. She stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, she shows a repeatable delivery, allowing her arm action to work loose to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 45-47 mph with slight cut. Changeup sits 38-40 mph with sink. Drop ball sits 44-45 mph. Curveball shits 45-46 mph with tight spin. Screw ball sits 45-46 mph. Off speed stuff show potential as quality pitches that will get outs. Control is well above average as she throws strikes with all her pitches.

  • 03/06/2022 - All-In Membership - Glendale (Phoenix), AZ Sophia is a 2025 graduate who is super versatile on the field. On the mound, she keeps the ball down and has good posture finishing her pitches. Her drop ball has great movement, and she keeps it low in the zone. Curve ball has correct spin, good break. Screw and Rise effective. At 2B, Sophia has active feet and a good pre-pitch stance. She has quick transitions and multiple arm slots. In the box from the left side, Sophia has a high hand setup, and she makes consistent contact (63mph exit velo). She also slaps and has proper mechanics and footwork with good bat control. Sophia continues to make strides of reaching her full potential. Overall, Sophia is an athlete with the skill set and tools to continue improving her game on the diamond. Additional Notes from SF for this spring, Freshman year: Drop – good spin, good wrist action, controls well, throws with confident Curve- good movement, controls very well, throws with confidence Rise – sharp movement, good wrist action, average control, throws with confidence Screw – Excellent wrist action, correct spin, controls well, throws with confidence Overall – This was one of Sophia’s best workouts to date with Softball Factory. At 2B, hitting, and on the mound she appeared to have her most confident day we’ve seen from her. At 2B, she played low and athletic, showed a quick/clean exchange, quick release and accuracy. Hands were soft and sure, very efficient. A lot of rhythm when hitting, good load and consistent contact. Slaps consistently through the 5/6 hole, direct swing with good hands. Pitching has gone to another level, and is turning into Sophia’s strongest position. Asked to pick 4 pitches, throws all 4 pitches with confidence, ranging 51-55mph. Throws strikes and has a very polished delivery.
