I used to be kind of shy, quiet and insecure. After my first year of playing softball, I wanted to quit. I was on a team that made me feel small, unimportant and not good enough. The next year when sign-ups came around my parents forced me to play…and let me just say, that was the single greatest thing that they could’ve ever done for me. That was the year that I had found my first love. Softball had given me a new-found confidence and gave me a sense of purpose. Everyone has a thing, and that was mine. With that being said, attached at the hip of my love for the game was a mountain of obstacles that I would have to overcome. Long story short, there were lots of tears, but the blood and sweat came after that. This sport has shaped me into the bold, and confident leader that I am today. You would have never guessed that I used to be shy, quiet and insecure. Softball has taught me how to be silly but serious, to learn and let go, that failure is okay, criticism is rough but necessary, and how to take ownership and to never say die.
My goal through high school was the same in softball, I just wanted to do everything to MY best ability. Ever since elementary school I have had a difficult time with English class and reading. We think that I have some learning disorder that revolves around that. It’s something that I was always embarrassed about because I was never in the “higher” class with my other friends. Being that I was young it made me feel stupid and like I wasn’t good at anything. I’ve learned to embrace my differences and how to compensate and find new strategies for what I’m not strong at. I am not just a high school student, but a student of softball. I know the game almost as well as I know my multiplication facts. In college, I want to go into education because I love helping and teaching others new things. Softball is more than just a game to me and I want to continue playing. I know that whatever team I’m on and whatever situation I’m in I will always give my all, encourage the people around me and lift others up.
