Dear coaches: My name is Allison Casavant and I am a junior (Class of 2024) at Cumberland High School in Cumberland, RI. I started playing softball when I was 5 and joined my first travel team at age 9. The reason I started playing softball was because all my friends were doing it and I am forever grateful they did. Along with making life long friends, I have learned life skills such as teamwork, how to depend on others, and how to persevere through hard times or challenges. When I was younger I was a catcher and fell in love with the position. I caught almost every game for my travel team and had so much fun doing it. When I joined a new team about 5 years after, I was told I was not going to catch anymore because I was more viable in the outfield. Although I loved catching, I was okay with being moved to another position because it was something new and I would still be helping my team. Four years later I have fallen in love with the outfield and wouldn't want to play any other position. Freshmen year I was a JV/Varsity swing player, mainly pinch running and hitting for the Varsity games. Practicing with the Varsity team everyday was such an enjoyable experience as a freshmen. I had so many seniors to look up to and learn from and I really got taught the level I needed to work up to. Sophomore year, I started for the Varsity team in Center Field and batted lead off all season. During the season I made school history by hitting the first ever out of the park home run at our home field, Tucker, which is approximately 290 ft to center. At the end of the season, I earned 3rd Team All State and 2nd Team All Division post season honors.
Along with softball I play basketball for my high school and have played Varsity my freshmen, sophomore, and junior year. Sophomore year, I was the leading scorer for my team and I made 3rd Team All Division. Last year, as a junior, I finished second in scoring and made 2nd Team All Division. When I am not playing sports I spend almost all of my time with my friends. My friends are very important to me and I love spending time with them. I also have a seasonal job at a local ice cream shop and another job at a local pet shop. I have learned how to work with the public, be responsible for doing daily tasks, and how to manage my time wisely. Before the pandemic once a month I would do missions with my church to raise and give out objects needed by the homeless such as food and clothing. Sadly, the pandemic stopped these events from happening but I am hoping it begins again. I have also helped coach a softball team for three years, second year 10U and first and second year 12U. I really enjoyed teaching kids how to get better at the sport I love. It also helped me reflect on myself and really pay attention to the basics of the game.
Thank you for taking the time to read about me.
