Hello, my name is Carina Walker and I'm a senior at University Pathways. When I was 6 years old I joined my first basketball team, the Trojans, and we were in the pee-wee league at Queen Anne park. The team was coached by my dad because he has a huge passion for basketball that he passed on to me as I started playing. I wasn't our best player but even from that age I showed a lot of potential and it was something I had a lot of fun doing. I joined my next team in middle school in the GPLA league at Green Meadows park. Because this was an older team I did have to pick up on the actual skills and not just the absolute basics I learned when I was younger. I continued to play with this team until unfortunately the program had to stop during quarantine. Starting highschool, I knew playing for our basketball team was something I wanted to pursue but I also knew I'd be rusty after not playing for almost 2 years. However, I knew I would regret not trying out anyway and I ended up making the varsity team. I started off needing a lot of improvement which was discouraging at first but it was an activity I grew to really care about and enjoy so I continued to play my sophomore and junior year. Outside of school I have also been practicing with my dad at our local park and playing for summer leagues. As well as basketball, I played a few other sports for the school like softball, volleyball, and track but out of everything basketball just continued to be the one I cared the most about. This school year, we didn't have many girls interested in joining our team so I worked with our coach to recruit more players and thankfully we managed enough for a team. I'm proud to represent my school in this sport for my last year here and I hope to continue playing until I no longer can.
