Being the only freshmen to make the Division 1 Varsity Girls Basketball team was one of the most impactful events of my entire high school career. But that was just the beginning of my self-development. I was challenged physically, mentally and emotionally. Punahou was the reigning Hawaii State Champions during my freshmen year. Many of the players were returning to the team; their firsthand experiences and guidance showed me what it takes to be a real leader. I was always the youngest player on the team. It was tough to “make my mark.” I had so much to prove because I was the “new kid.” All of the starting guards were just one year above me and have proven themselves on that State Championship team. But being challenged every single day by these elite players made me a better player despite so many people telling me I was wasting my time. I stayed focused and determined to my goal. If I could beat the best guards in the state, then I would become one of the best guards in the state.
I was very fortunate to be a part of this team. It strengthened my confidence, my aggressiveness, my patience, my attitude and my hunger to want to get better every day. I learned to seize every opportunity I had and to make the most out of it. My mindset is not “Oh it’s okay, try again next time.” I’m more like “This is it. Let’s get it done now.” I am ready and more than excited for my senior season to take place. I am prepared to be a good role model to the new team, being one of three seniors and only a total of 5 returning to the varsity squad from last year. I am willing and able to push my team past each of our own limits so that we can really grow as a team, make a statement for ourselves and shock the state. I am determined to make sure every player has faith in this team and in themselves. Being the eldest sibling of three, the only 4 year varsity player, not only a basketball player but also a hula dancer, I am more than sure that I have what it takes to make a difference on your team and in your program because of my commitment, determination, perseverance, and good attitude.
