Hi, my name is Nya Jones and I am a 5’8 guard. What makes me special is that I am an all-around player with good basketball IQ. My goals for basketball are to continue to learn and grow as a player. I have played for one of the strongest high school basketball programs in the country, Montini Catholic High School. Due to my mother moving, I am no longer at Montini Catholic, but appreciate all the skills Coach Nichols and staff have taught me. I am now at another great school and basketball program, Glenbard South High School.
I love the game of basketball and started playing in fourth grade. One of the first things I learned was how to rebound. Plus, I feel God gave me these long arms and big hands to catch rebounds. At the time, I was tall for my age and trained as a post player. I have never forgotten those skills. It also does not hurt that I can jump high. I can jump as high as girls 6’3. That is why Coach Nichols often played me as a 5/center, plus he knows I am not afraid to post-up on girls that are over 6 feet tall. Now at 5’8, I have developed my guard skills and can handle the ball pretty well. I am fast and usually the first person down the court.
Not only am I a good rebounder and quick, my specialties are also driving to the basket, defense and free throws. When we run plays, my coach knows I can run every position. I have played every position on the court, but my high school and AAU coaches usually play me in the 2 or 3 spot and occasionally I will take the ball down.
As a player, my favorite part of the game is defense. As they say, “Offense wins games, but defense wins championships.” Defense is important to me because it comes natural and helps stop a team from scoring. One defensive stop can give you a possession and win a game.
I invite you to check out my game schedule and come to see me play either at Glenbard South High School or on Illinois Rockets. Thank you for reading my personal statement and I hope to hear from you soon.
