Since I was four years old, my dream has been to play college basketball. I started playing travel basketball in sixth grade. I made varsity as a freshman at Ann Arbor Huron, which is very competitive, annually a Michigan Class A top 10 program, and always playing the best teams in the state. Playing with and learning from four division one basketball players at Huron has helped challenge me to become the player I am today.
I am a very well rounded player with a high basketball IQ. I am an accurate shooter and hit 40% of my 3 pointers this summer for my travel team. I pride myself on being the hardest worker on defense and the smartest player on offense who takes care of the ball. For me, blocking a shot, getting a steal or feeding the post is just as satisfying as hitting a deep three or making a layup. I am a very good shot blocker and rebounder, because I use my long arms and box out to get into position. I love every minute that I am working and improving my game whether it’s in the driveway or at the rec center. My favorite place to be is at the rec center playing with older, stronger, faster guys who have sped up my reaction time and anticipation. My twin sister and I are usually the only girls there, but that doesn’t bother me as I know that playing against guys strengthens my game.
By working hard and managing my time carefully, I have been able to improve as an athlete and keep a 4.0 GPA. I hope to get into a good program for engineering or product design, and to achieve this goal I have to take advanced classes, especially in math and science. I make sure to save time for volunteering, especially at Food Gatherers, and to participate in the Women In Science and Engineering club at Huron for which I am the secretary. In my free time, one of my favorite things to do is to watch college basketball (and football and soccer).
I not only play travel and high school basketball but varsity and travel soccer too. I am also a very strong soccer player and started on varsity as a sophomore. I am always actively playing on two or more sports teams year round which takes strong dedication, focus and time management to juggle all of these along with making school a priority. Playing a second sport at a high level allows to me further challenge myself and teaches me how to effectively work with my teammates and make my team better. Playing soccer also gives me strong endurance for basketball so I can go full speed the entire game.
I know that by continuing to work on and off the court I will be able to achieve both my athletic and academic goals in college.
