Living in a rural community in the Upper Peninsula I have had to make many sacrifices to seek opportunities to play basketball throughout my middle school and high school years. Some of the sacrifices I have made include traveling 4-5 hours each way to attend a practice, spending time in the gym working out, and spending lots of time in the gym working on my game often times alone. Throughout my years of playing basketball, I have learned that everyone is not willing to commit to the sport. This reality has made my high school team experience a bit of a challenge. Stepping on to the varsity team as a freshman was intimidating. However, I have been able to standout as a leader on the team as a freshman. Averaging 19 points a game, I was able to earn much respect from my fellow teammates, and maintain their friendship. After a year, I was able to earn their respect as a leader, even though I was the youngest player on the team. My confidence on and off the basketball, court has grown tremendously after this experience. I have learned a lot about humility after walking on the court as a freshman. My goal was to be the best version of myself and build my team up in the process.
Basketball has taught me a lot about self-discipline, self-motivation, and time management. It has been essential for me to balance my spiritual life, academics and athletics. It is my goal to obtain a degree in pediatric nursing. I have a desire to play basketball throughout my college years. I feel that I would be an asset on a college team, due to my ability of being a leader, managing my time wisely, and not being afraid to put in the hard work to succeed. It is my goal to attend a college that will also allow me to grow spiritually, academically and athletically.
