Personal Statement

I have participated in both local and AAU tournaments including S&G Anaheim, California Storm Classic, Nike Tournament of Champions and the Las Vegas Jam on It. Most recently, I completed my junior year of varsity basketball as the starting point guard and co-captain of our team. I have received MVP awards, 2x player of the year over all the public schools my sophomore and junior season, 2x Fab 15 appearances as ranked 6th and 7th player in the whole state of Hawaii my sophomore and junior season, and MVP award for girls basketball award 2 years in a row at Kahuku High school. These events and recognitions are the direct result of hard work, perseverance and determination. They have and continue to play a major role in molding me into the person that I am, both on and off the court. Most recently, I have moved to vegas over the summer. I moved away from my home of Hawaii and my family, to live with other family members because I truly believe that level of exposure and intensity in the mainland is what I need to improve and prepare for the collegiate level of ball.

I am a leader who not only motivates, but also knows and shows the importance of how actions are louder than your words. I am a strong believer in resilience, communication and patience, being key ingredients in accomplishing chemistry and unity between teammates, as each team is only as strong as its weakest link. I acknowledge all the mentors in my life and understand that learning never ends, thus making me very coachable and teachable. Furthermore, I am a recipient of great teaching, and am very passionate about sharing my knowledge of not just basketball, but knowledge in general, to anyone who may benefit from it.

Graduation from high school will take place in a few years and I will further my education in college, wherever it may be. I will be strong both on and off the court. I aspire to gain both an undergraduate and graduate degree, because my knowledge is what I know to be the key to my success in the future.   ~ Leiah
