Maria Barela '21 Recruiting Profile

My name is Maria Barela. I am in the graduating class of 2021. I attend Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico and am a 5’7” starting point guard. Starting basketball at a very young age in 3rd grade at the local community center and moving to the school team in 5th grade, basketball has been my passion. Defensively I am very strong in the wing area.  My speed, strength, and wing span help create a very successful defender and rebounder. Offensively, I am very successful in leading the fast-break and beating defenders in the open court often leading to transition scoring for my teams. I am good in the half-court offense able to get to the basket and either converting or getting to the foul line and continue to improve my 3-point shot. I take pride in my hard work-ethic and devotion to the game. I have also been a varsity athlete in cross country (1yr), volleyball (2 yr), track (2 yr) and tennis (1yr). I am dedicated to not only becoming a successful athlete, but a student as well. Most of most of my core classes consist of honors and advanced placement level curriculum, consistently making the school's honor roll. I love being part of a team and working toward success together. Throughout my basketball career I have been nominated to two All-District teams, All-State 2^ndteam, State Tournament 2^ndteam and this past season. I was awarded honorable mention All-District and State Tournament 1^st-team as a member of the 5A West Mesa State Championship team. I hope that is only the start of what’s to come in my future basketball career.  I hope this AAU season creates growth for me as an athlete and a person. I sincerely love the game of basketball. Creating a future through the game I love would be an unbelievable experience and achievement. I look forward to working hard and becoming the best player I can be.
