I have been playing basketball since I was 6 years old, basketball has always been my passion from a very young age. I have always used my love for sports in many ways. A big way sports helped was academically. But I also think basketball has helped me live and learn, and that comes from the mental part of it.
Academics have always come pretty easy to me and I think basketball has helped with that. I work better under pressure and having a lot of things I have to complete. I like being on a routine. I go to school, practice, workouts, homework and repeat and it’s a continuous cycle and it’s always been that way. And for that my grades stay high.
Now the mental part of it has always been the hardest for me to overcome. Underperforming is one of my biggest mental concerns when it comes to basketball. No matter how many points I had or how much we won by I’ll always look at the negative side of it because I know I could’ve done better. One person that changed my perspective on that and still is, My coach now… everyday he tells me in a way I understand, “next play Gracie next play”.This speaks to me in so many ways. It helps me understand and move on.
So Basketball is my “Live and learn” sport and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The lessons it has taught me throughout the years and the relationships with people I have gained shows you how much basketball isn’t just a game for me it’s everything. So now I play for me. I play for my coach and I play for the little girl at 6 years old who fell in love with the sport and never looked back.
