Personal Statement

I love the game of basketball. I literally grew up in a gym watching my older sister and cousin and have played since I was old enough to hold a basketball. I have a strong passion for the game and am very competitive. My desire to learn and get better every single day is strong because I am always setting goals for myself. Like, I would like to dunk the ball before I graduate HS.

When I was growing up, I was always the tallest player, stuck in the post. I knew that was not where I wanted to be. With the help of my parents, I surrounded myself with people who believed in me & my goals and began working on my guard skills. I’m now playing the wing & will transition into the 2/3 by my junior year, all positions by graduation. After HS, my dream is to play college hoops & make it to The Dance! To continue on to play Professionally would be an amazing goal that I hope to achieve as well. With hard work and dedication, it might just come true with the growth and expansion of women’s programs.

  • Coaches, Ava is a gym rat with seemingly unlimited potential. Beyond her obvious physical gifts of height and athleticism, coaches should be most impressed by her rapidly improving skill sets and basketball IQ. Over the last year, I have seen her grow to be much more comfortable as a playmaker from the wing. She can hit 3's at a high rate off the catch and off the dribble. Off the drive, Ava is a strong, physical finisher with her right hand who is becoming more confident finishing creatively with her weak hand and off of two feet. She often uses shot fakes and pivots around the rim to create easy, under-control scoring opportunities. Her desire to improve really shows in the growth of her IQ. For instance, there are not many high schoolers of any age that can match her knowledge in the pick and roll, both as a screener and ball handler. As a screener, she not only understands when to roll, when to slip, and when to pop, but she regularly makes the proper read that leads to easy scoring opportunities. As a ball handler in the pick and roll, I've seen the game slow down a bit for her. She's able to come off screens with poise and make good decisions. She can hit the 3 if she gets space, get downhill against aggressive defenders, and is quickly becoming a better passer as she gets more reps as a playmaker. Defensively, Ava is active and communicates very well. You can often hear her calling out screen coverages, help side responsibilities, etc. Most impressively though is her ability to get deflections and block shots. Her combination of length, speed, and tenacity makes an impact on almost every defensive possession. Ava is a safe bet to be the "most improved player" on any team she will ever be on because of her love for the game and coachability. Pair that with her physical gifts; it is not hard to see how Ava can have a long, successful basketball career.
