Personal Statement
My name is Claudia Disbrow and I'm not just a basketball player; I'm an athlete. I am not just a student; I am a scholar. What makes me stand out from other recruits is my hustle on and off the court.
My collegiate goals obviously include playing basketball, but there is always a bigger picture. I plan on becoming a Physical Therapists to help other athletes stay healthy. I'm currently taking a specialty class for Sports Medicine that gives me valuable hands on experience, and a NASM certification of Specialized Trainer in May. I won 1st in state at the annual HOSA competition for Sports Medicine as well, and will be attending Nationals in June. What is great about sports medicine is I can help my teammates daily. I recommend stretches when they ask, I tape ankles and wrists, and I incorporate multiplanar warm ups. So, not only would I make a great addition to the basketball roster, I would serve equally well as the team's potential athletic trainer. I also recently got a job at Planet Fitness where I plan on utilizing my skills from this class to help others reach their fitness goals. I'm sixteen working at a gym that hires at eighteen, ask me how I did that. They see I have goals, maturity, and the determination to reach them.
My athletic aspirations is to be on a team and help make that team and everyone around me better. I'm a good candidate because no matter what team I end up on I still want to win. Besides the fact I can shoot from anywhere on the court, I show early, I study film, and I take preparation serious. I am respectful of coaches and my teammates and lead by example. I do all the little things and I don't do it half way because how you do one thing is how you do everything.
I am not just a student, I am a scholar. I don't just receive information, I take interest and seek out knowledge independently. How many other recruits an say they are in four different honor societies? To accent my 4.46 GPA, I am proudly in the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa (honors in social studies), Mu Alpha Theta (honors in math), and the National Technical Honor Society. In addition, I am a member of the Future Medical Professionals of America club, Red Cross club, and the Psychology club. How many recruits can say they balance sports with a job with that kind of school involvement? My academic aspirations for college is to continue to absorb as much as I can in the field of medicine.
I am not just a basketball player, I am an athlete. I grew up playing soccer and have ran track since 6th grade. When I broke my foot in 7th grade they put me in throws and I ended up breaking the school record for shot put and discus. In high school I went to Regionals and found a spot on the record board again, all while stepping in as the student coach for the throwers while we had no coach. I was the captain and quarterback of Powderpuff football team for two years, and participant in Battle of the Classes sporting event competition for two years.
If I am not at school, at practice, at work, or at a club, I am volunteering. I run 5ks for charity, help churches will food drives, put together school kits, and build picnic tables for the Elementary kids through Richmond Tool Bank. Helping others makes me the happiest. That's another thing that separates me from other recruits; I am use to giving back to the community, which I hope many teams do as well at the collegiate level.
Anyways, I apologize for the length of this message but I hope you understand my aspirations a little bit better. I am a great basketball player, but I also have an insatiable curiosity for Sports Medicine and goals to help others.
