1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
The local youth program I was a part of offered many different sports to elementary school students, and I tried them all. Pretty quickly I learned soccer was not my sport, but basketball was. In 6th grade, I was introduced to my first travel team. From that experience, I began to form goals for my basketball career. In 7th grade, I broke both wrists trying out for the middle school basketball team. While not being able to play was disappointing, I became a manager on the team for that season. Then COVID hit and there was no basketball, again. Through those roadblocks, I learned that I had to work hard myself. I spent many hours shooting and practicing moves on my home court.
Each one of these experiences taught me to trust myself. I cannot let my mind tell me I cannot when I know I can. I will use my own determination and this mental approach in high school.
Finding a balance between school and athletics is difficult. However, I work hard to achieve my academic goals and maintain a 3.5 GPA or above. As I go to college and beyond, I will have to maintain that balance to continue reaching my goals. My goal is to play college basketball.
I support basketball outside of my own goals by coaching at the ACTS basketball camp through my church. I am proud to say I am a Christian and serve the Lord. Being active in youth programs like ACTS lets me support others on their journey, my faith, and my passion for basketball.
