Basketball is a sport I am very passionate about, and I have been participating in it since I was in sixth grade. I started playing after I moved back to the U.S., as I had been living internationally in Scotland. Being immersed in Scottish culture was a very educational as well as interesting experience, though it was somewhat of a challenge to move back to the U.S. and leave what I had come to know behind. Starting basketball was crucial in providing me with a new support system and community, along with giving me opportunities to make new friends.
From playing basketball in sixth grade to now, I have developed a better understanding of what it means to be hardworking, a teammate, and how much basketball can positively influence life. I have grown significantly as a person and a player through basketball. I have had the chance to play on both Junior Varsity and Varsity. Playing on Junior Varsity in 2019 empowered me to be a better teammate and a leader, as I was promoted to captain as well as becoming a Varsity Swing Player. Being a captain was a great experience because it showed me how to be a leader and how to better support my team and myself. Being captain and a swing player also taught me better discipline, which enabled me to get awarded the Scholar Athlete Award, and my First Year Varsity Letter Award. My experiences on Junior Varsity prepared me for my role and responsibility on Varsity. This 2020 season I played on Varsity as a starter, and faced many tough opponents and challenges which improved my focus, confidence, and skills. Playing on Varsity challenged me to improve even more so than Junior Varsity, which led to my personal accomplishment of being voted Most Improved Player by my team, being awarded the Scholar -Athlete Award, and being awarded my Second Year Varsity Letter. The skills I have developed during basketball have positively influenced my academic accomplishments. In July 2021, I will be attending the National Youth Leadership Forum: Law & CSI located in Washington D.C.. This opportunity is invitation only, and I was selected based on my leadership abilities and my academic accomplishments. This class is a wonderful opportunity for me, because I would like to pursue a career in Law Enforcement, and this class will aid in narrowing down my career focus. My long-term goals are to attend a four-year university, and continue strengthening my abilities in basketball.
