My name is Ellie Meineke and I am a senior at Mount Vernon High School located in eastern Iowa. I have been playing golf since my sophomore year. The first year I played for the Lisbon-Mount Vernon girls team I was placed in the #2 varsity spot and most recently placed in the #1 varsity spot. To keep myself playing competitively in the off season, I am on the women's league team for my home course, Kernoustie in Mount Vernon. This is also my second summer playing for women's league. In August, I will be playing in the #5 spot for the WEIGA (Women's Eastern Iowa Golf Association) tournament. Golf is a sport I enjoy because it is a self recognizing sport in a way that you score yourself. You build character through honesty and independence. I have found my niche with golf because I can go out and compete not only with myself but with the course.
My dream after high school, for as long as I can remember, is to become an elementary teacher. I have always bonded with kids and love watching them learn. In high school, we have an opportunity to go and work in the classroom with a teacher through Elementary Aid class, and I have taken the class twice! I am also involved in the Thundering Herd, a student mentoring and leadership program that our high school offers. We mentor freshman and help them throughout their first year of high school and make the high school a better learning environment as a whole. Junior year I was on the principle advisory board, which kept our principle up to date on the happenings and issues in the school from the student perspective. This fall, I was picked to be one of three main Thundering Herd leaders, which is an honor knowing that my teachers trust me to help take control and be a leader of the large group. My junior year I was inducted into the National Honors Society. I am currently applying for as many scholarships and grants as I can as I strive to achieve my long time dream!
