Personal Statement

Hello!

My name is Carly Gavant and I am a student at Packer Collegiate Institute Class of 2023. Sports has always been a huge part of my life. I have played soccer for ten years, (club soccer for six) basketball for seven years, and golf for two years. Although I love the camaraderie of being a part of a team, golf has the same appeal to me as math always has; no matter how difficult the problem, there will always be a definitive solution. When I was younger, playing sports was more about the fun and fitness of it. I just wanted to go out, work a sweat, and have fun doing it. However, as I have gotten older, I have become more and more aware of how many life lessons sports has taught me and how much they have prepared me for the future.

  • If I were to describe myself as an athlete, I would say my most unique quality is my single-mindedness and persistence. Once I set a goal for myself I will not let up until I have accomplished it. There have been too many times where I have found myself at the driving range looking up to see that it is close to closing and I am the only one there. Although I am highly competitive, I have a laid-back personality so I appear cool under pressure (I never let them see me sweat!)

While sports are and always will be my passion, academics are my top priority. My ideal school would be an institution that celebrates excellence in both and that offers a well-rounded and diverse student experience. Currently, I have become very interested in Architecture and Sustainable Design and hope to pursue studies around this area in the future. Thank you so much for reading my page!

Sincerely,

Carly Gavant

  • To Whom it may concern, My name is Dr. Ashley Mak and I am the owner of Hudson River fitness, a strength and conditioning facility to help people of all ages to achieve their health and fitness goals. I am writing to you today to consider accepting Carly Gavant as a student at your organization. Carly has been an athlete of mine for over 5 years, training in strength and conditioning for her sports including soccer, basketball, and recently golf. Carly demonstrates her ability to be the right fit for your organization by possessing a high level of grit, balance, and strong leadership qualities. Her admittance into your programs will be a positive reflection of you and the organization as well as provide the right foundation for her success in the future. Angela Duckworth describes “grit” as “a trait of perseverance. Grit enables an individual to persevere in accomplishing a goal despite obstacles over an extended period”. It is safe to say that Carly has had her fair share of injuries. However, this has not limited her ability to find the best route to continue to improve her athletic performance throughout the years. Carly always finds a way to work around her injury, a skill that she developed early on in her athletic career. This is also present in her academics, attending the Steven’s Cooperative School where she is faced with stimulating problems to solve in her classes. She not only works hard in school, but her grades are a reflection of her ability to perform well academically while having a full training schedule outside of class. A high level of grit is also found in many of the successful leaders of today’s world, and is a quality that is important for a young adult such as Carly. Student athletes are in a unique situation, as they have to balance their life with training, school, and social schedules. Carly demonstrates the epitome of balance, as she is able to maintain a high level of academic, athletic and social performance. Finding balance is important to excel both on and off the field and this is something that I encourage with all my clients. In fact, I tell all my student athletes that rest and balance is key if they want a long and successful athletic career. Carly recognized this early on in her training, understanding that she needed to manage her time in all aspects of her life so that she is able to be the best version of herself. This would sometimes mean having to take a day off from strength training so that she can either recover from a physically stressful practice or to spend more time on a difficult school assignment. As her coach, I believe her ability to maintain the right balance in her life will lead to her success in the future as both a student, athlete, and whatever she desires to be. Both soccer and basketball are team sports. However, great teams are lead by strong leaders that allow the group to be successful. What makes a good leader is being able to communicate as well as understand the energies and rhythms with her teammates. Carly demonstrates these skills strongly, as her performance in both of these sports are quite high. She has been selected for various elite teams and has contributed greatly to their successes. Carly’s communication skills allow her to understand the needs of her teams which lead them to victory. As stated above, Carly demonstrates three strong qualities of grit, balance, and leadership which makes her a very strong candidate for your organization. Her acceptance into your program will provide the useful tools necessary for her success in the future. Carly’s hard working nature of surpassing various different obstacles, managing many responsibilities and commitments, as well as her ability to lead others will provide to be useful as she transitions into her position as a student at your school. Thank you for your time, Dr. Ashley Mak, PT, DPT, CSCS
