My name is Alex DeRee and I play for Dublin Coffman High School in Columbus, OH. I have been playing golf since I was a kindergartener and started playing competitively when I was in the 4th grade. I have always loved playing and competing in golf. I started in camps developing my love for the sport; as I got older, I started playing tournaments, taking lessons, and eventually joined my middle school's team. From there my love for golf boomed. I knew that I loved playing on a team and that I wanted to play in high school and in college. Friends and family are two of my main values, so it's really important to me that I join a team that is close where I will fit in well.
As I stopped seeing improvement with my previous swing coach, I have just changed coaches in the hopes of dropping my average down a few strokes for my senior season. I have been told that I am coachable, competitive, and I’m willing to put in a lot of work to get where I want to go. My work ethic extends beyond the course. As a part of my district's IB Diploma Programme, I am also dedicated to my academics, and I carry a 4.17 GPA. I am looking for a school where I can be competitive athletically, but that will also challenge me in academics. While I haven’t decided on a specific major, math and science interest me, particularly chemistry. I also show my commitment by working out twice a week in a golf-specific class in order to improve my swing speed, rotation abilities, and strength overall.
Coffman is part of the Ohio Central Conference(OCC). My achievements on my high school team include:
Three-year varsity player
2020 State tournament team participant. As a freshman, I shot my best rounds for the whole season at state (85-87).
2020 OCC average of 96
2021 Second Team All-OCC (average of 82) and Honorable Mention All-District. I also was rewarded with most improved on our team.
2022 Second Team All-OCC (average of 79.33) and Honorable Mention All-District.
For my senior year, I am working to have a 74 OCC average and be a state individual contender out of my district. To achieve this, I will be working specifically to hit more greens in regulation and decrease the number of putts I have per round.
