Personal Statement

Hello,

My name is Makayla Grübb and I am a 16yr old golfer who has been competing for just over 6 years.  My desire is to continue playing at the collegiate level and be part of a team that works, supports and inspires each other both in golf and life.  I am the youngest of 4 children and parents who have spent their lives in service to others.  I have learned the value of hard work, determination, and perseverance in moments when life presents challenges.  Having watched my special need sister overcome daily challenges has given me and appreciation for what resiliency truly is and she remains a constant source of inspiration.  Learning is something I am passionate about both academically and athletically.  I have never left the classroom or golf course without having learned a lesson either about myself, the subject or the game.

Presently, I hold a 4.3 GPA while attending the Governors program.  The academic challenges this program provides will prepare me for the challenges of college and life as a student athlete.  Time management is one of the most difficult transitions any new student must learn.  I am confident that because of my present academic requirements (2 honors classes, 2 AP) and athletic schedule my leap into college and athletics will be a challenge I am prepared for.

Currently I am in the process of working with my swing and putting coach to further my game and lower my scores.  With a strong team and determination it is my goal to stand beside some of the top ranked junior golfers in the country.  My tournament schedule includes several invitationals against numerous nationally ranked ladies.  These are challenges I seek.  Challenges that enable me to test myself against the best and in doing so elevate my game.

As I look to the future, I hope that I am given that opportunity to help my Team both collectively and as individuals to reach new heights.  I’ll close with the following quote from Napoleon Bonaparte, and something I use as my inspiration.

“The reason most people fail instead of succeed is they trade what they want most for what they want at the moment.”

Thank you and best of luck to you and your team.

Respectfully,

Makayla Grübb

  • 1st day I shot a 76. Took an unfortunate triple on 10 and was only able to get 1 birdie. Conditions were tough with wind increasing to over 20mph due to severe weather and tornado warnings. Day 2 I was able to shoot a -1 under 71 under very windy conditions. My putting on the back 9 was excellent and my U&D percentage was 80%. Tough two days but given the conditions I was happy with the scoring and winning by 5.

  • The below is the VSGA Article SUFFOLK — Rising Colonial Forge High School junior Makayla Grubb entered this week as a relative unknown on the Virginia women’s golf scene. No longer. Grubb sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole on Thursday at Cedar Point Club for a 1-up victory over stroke-play medalist Melanie Walker in the championship match of the 98th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship. Grubb, a member at Augustine Golf Club in Stafford, became the third junior winner of the event since 2019, joining Rory Weinfurther and Tatum Walsh. And she recorded the victory in her debut in the event, navigating sweltering conditions as temperatures reached 95 degrees and the heat index made it felt closer to 105. Walker was the latest impressive opponent that Grubb defeated in her run to the championship. She opened with a win over Roanoke’s Kathryn Ha, who on Thursday was named to the U.S. roster for the 2023 Junior Solheim Cup team. In the quarterfinals, she ousted past USGA champion and two-time Women’s Amateur champion Lauren Greenlief. On Thursday morning, she bested Old Dominion women’s golf coach Mallory Kane. And she defeated Walker, the University of Missouri sophomore, in the final. Not bad for a 16-year-old. “It’s really huge,” said Grubb (pronounced Groob). “It’s an exciting tournament to win. I’ve been working really hard on my game so it’s good to see it finally show itself. It’s really exciting, especially with the amount of competition and the great players I had to beat. … It’s kind of surreal.” The final match was an incredibly tight affair in which Grubb never trailed but also never held more than a 1-up lead. The heat began to affect both players on the back nine. Walker chose to walk during the week and didn’t relent on that strategy until she started to feel overheated after hitting her tee shot on 13. After tying the match with an up-and-down from the bunker for par on 13, she jumped in a cart for the remaining five holes. “I tried to walk all of it, and I think that really caught up to me, with the heat advisory,” Walker said. “It’s either spending more time in the gym trying to figure it out, or be more aware of my limits and what I need to do.” Walker, who defeated Delaware’s Christina Carroll in the semifinals, didn’t lean on the heat as an excuse, instead choosing to praise Grubb’s play. Grubb made two huge putts down the stretch: an uphill 25-footer for birdie to win No. 14 and the final putt on 18. Walker hit her tee shot on the final hole some 40 yards behind Grubb’s drive, and her approach went to the far right side of the green, leaving her about a 45-foot putt for birdie. She had plenty of work left for par after her lag putt, but Grubb never gave her a chance to tie the hole, making her birdie putt to clinch the win. “I honestly just took a deep breath in, deep breath out, and I was like, ‘You’ve got this,'” Grubb said. “I said, ‘Trust your line,’ and then I putted it and it went in. … Yeah, it was pretty nervy.” She controlled those nerves like a champion.

  • Had a good tournament. Was able to make 9 birdies in the two days and finish 2 under for the tournament. My putting was much improved but need to work on eliminating bogeys better. All I. All it was a great week and I’m headed to the Notah Begay Championship in November.

  • This was a one day tournament I thought would be fun and see how my game was as I prepare for the Notah Begay Qualifer. I shot a 1 over 73 on. 6840 yds course. My driving was a bit off having hit only 57 percent of the fairways. My GIR was 89 percent having hit 16 of 18. My proximity to the hole wasn’t where I’d like it leaving my longer putts for birdie. I only carded two birdies and didn’t take advantage of the par 5s. All in all it was a good round with some good numbers but I know lowers scores or coming.

  • VSGA 54th Junior Championship
  • 7/06/23 to 7/08/23
  • I shot a 3 day total of 225 on a course measuring 5970 yds. Overall my ball striking was good as well as my driver. I average 60 percent Fairways, 71 percent GIR, and 57 percent U&D. I had trouble with speed of the greens and was leaving my putts short. Since the tournament I’ve worked on my speed and have made significant improvements.
