Personal Statement

My name is Coraline Lucia Otis, I'm going into my freshman year at the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts in the Dance Program. My gym is Force gymnastics and i am currently a level 8 gymnast. I aspire to become a collegiate gymnast. I am a very humble person. I don't take wins very seriously, I'm always ready to get back to practice to get better for the next competition. I will not give up on myself, even when I miss multiple turns I don't give up, I will go and do some drills or I go talk to my coaches and see if they know any drills or mindsets that can help me. I simply don't see the purpose of giving up because I know there's always a solution. I feel like when you give up you're just holding yourself back. When I'm having a tough practice and it's hard for me to make my skills I keep telling myself "Don't give up Cora you got this, you know how to do this, just keep saying your MC (mental choreography) and go for it." I know how to encourage myself and how to get through hardships by myself in gymnastics or just things in school or my life.

I take criticism well and I like to get constructive criticism, I don't feel embarrassed about making making mistakes, I know that it's part of the process of getting better. I think of criticism as corrections, my coaches just want me to get better and so do I! Corrections are good because they can help you connect the dots to find certain parts of your body that are weak. When you find parts of your body that are weak you can start doing conditioning that is meant to get that area stronger so you can start to improve your skills and also make skills easier for you.

I like animals very much. Ever since I was young I was very interested in animals, I watched almost every documentary about animals on Netflix. When I was six I got the Smithsonian "Animal Encyclopedia: The Definitive Visual Guide" My absolute favorite was Felis margarita aka the Sand cat. I remember telling my mom how I was gonna get one when I grew up. For college my major would be Zoology or Marine biology. I have a few branches I am interested I'm like Ecology, Reef keeping, and Cetology for Marine biology and Ecology, and Ethology for Zoology. I believe the ocean is the most important thing on our planet. The ocean contributes to 90% of all ecosystems on Earth and still the ocean has the least amount of wildlife reserves. I am very passionate about protecting wildlife.

I am good at my academics. My best are English and Science. My benchmarking has been very good all year with my English being the best. I have the highest reading level in my class which is about the same reading level as a 11-12 grader. My math has gone up every time I did benchmarking. I'm also I'm all honors classes and I'm in the NJHS (National Junior Honor Society). I also won second place at my school's Science fair, my project was about seeing if bottled water was better quality than lake water I ran through a homemade water filter. I do struggle with math, but I still work hard and try my best. Something that makes me proud is that I actually used to have a really hard time with English, I even had to go to reading help, but I never give up and i think I've come a long way because of that.

I'm a very hard worker and very focused so that I can accomplish my goals. i am a good team mate and i always cheer on my friends at practice and at competitions. My coaches always tell me that I am coachable and I listen to them when they give me the corrections that I need to make me better. Even though I struggle with things sometimes, I always try my hardest and I never give up.
