My name is Makenna Percival and I am a 2004, elite-level left-handed forward currently playing in the Junior Women's Hockey League (JWHL) for the Pacific Steelers. My goal is to pursue post-secondary academics and hockey at the USport, NCAA, or ACHA level. I typically play left-wing, however, I am a versatile player and have played LW, RW, center, and at times, defense. I am passionate about all aspects of hockey, from strength and training to skills and development, to gameplay.
The biggest attributes I bring as a team player are my strong work ethic, my dedication, my compete level, and my ambition. I strive to be the best player, the best teammate, and the best student I can be through continually challenging myself on and off the ice. As a player, I have been identified through my strength in skating -both in speed and agility-, my forechecking and backchecking, my hockey sense/IQ, and my play-making skills, which position me to be a defensive and offensive threat to my opponents.
I live in Victoria, British Columbia where there were few opportunities growing up to play competitive female hockey, so I played competitive boys from Novice Development through to Bantam Rep. I learned early on, that as a small girl playing on a boys team, I had to stand out to get on competitive teams. I had to skate faster, be more agile, think smarter, and make a bigger impact. However, after playing full-contact Bantam Rep (I was named Assistant Captain) I realized that I could no longer play like a boy. I had to learn how to play like a girl. In 2018/2019, I moved to Vancouver to play for the Delta Hockey Academy female varsity team where I ranked 8th overall in CSSHL play that season and posted 20 points in 24 games, and 2 points in 3 games for the prep team. Unfortunately, in March 2019, the Pandemic hit and I returned home where I played BCEHL AAA until I transitioned to JWHL.
Academically, I am proud to report that with my hockey schedule, I have maintained an Honour Roll status since grade 10 with a GPA of 3.7. The human body and the biomechanics of the human body and its ability to heal itself, influence how it works, or create changes, has always deeply fascinated me. As a result, I am hoping to get into kinesiology, athletic therapy, or exercise science and then pursue a post-graduate program in physiotherapy.
