I do not come from an area with a lot of opportunity for hockey. It is a one hour drive to our nearest ice rink. We chose a two hour drive to join a club we felt had a stronger program. I first became interested in the sport watching my friends and little sister play roller hockey. I joined roller hockey at twelve years old and became hooked. I transitioned to ice hockey shortly after. Earning a spot on my first travel team at thirteen years old, I had to learn how to skate and play at a rapid pace. I started at an age where most kids had years of experience and skill ahead of me. Determination drove me to put in a lot of extra time and effort to make the team. I am pleased in how far I have come in such a short time. Some of my proudest moments include winning the skating category in a skills competition, earning the title of alternate captain on three of my teams, ending my bantam season in third place rising up from a rocky start, and making the boys 16u AA spring tournament team. I was the only girl in the entire league. Our team took third place in that as well.
I have learned to be adaptable and work with others, even when I would have chosen a different play. While I am most confident in the left defense position, I am always willing to play in a position that benefits the team the most. I was taught that the mind will give up long before the body. Demonstrating the tenacity to not give up on any play, shift, or game, has earned me more ice time. My drive and willingness to do what it takes to reach my goals makes me a valued team member.
Academically, I am driven to be at the top. I do not settle for less than my best. My choice in which college to attend will be influenced most by opportunities in graphic design and animation, as well as programs in criminology. I would love to attend a school that challenges me and partners with my future career, as well as a school that can offer a highly competitive hockey program where I can contribute my abilities to make a successful team.
