Personal Statement
My name is Filippa Kajsa Wahlfried, a 2020 graduate from Karlskrona, Sweden. I am a starter on my division 1 hockey team Karlskrona HK where I currently play as a left wing with jersey number 12. I normally play as a center, I am 5’9” and weigh 165 pounds.
Since four years of age I've been playing hockey. Where I grew up I did not have the option of playing girl’s hockey, which I did not mind at all considering my determination nor my physique have never been a problem. Already back then I had a dream of playing Hockey in North America when I got older. So my intention was to play boy’s hockey for as long as I could to naturally develop more strength and speed. Playing with the boys have given me advantage, because boy’s hockey is much more competitive than girl’s. I was pushed hard on a day-to-day basis and that made me a strong hockey player with a powerful winning mentality. I played with my Youth Team until I switched to girl’s hockey at the age of 16. I made the switch at that age primarily for academic reasons. I probably could have continued to play boy's hockey one or two more years and then made the switch to women's hockey.
At the rink, I consider myself to be a team leader who tries to lead by being the best player I can be. I always try to make the players around me better on the ice by pushing the pace and making smart plays. On the ice, coaches see me as a hardworking two-way power forward with a combination speed and strength. I consistently make accurate passes and read the play. Along with a hard and accurate shot, I pride myself on being a strong skater who is dominant in front of the opponents goal by screening and picking up rebounds. I will do whatever it takes to get the puck into the net. I am very coachable and willing to really put in all the effort to improve myself as a hockey player. I have learned that listening and learning from your mistakes will always help you develop into a better player. What sets me apart from others is my ability to apply what I am learning, I have the drive and compassion to master it. Due to my great passion for the competitive environment, I am interested in attending a school with very competitive athletic program.
Off ice practice is just as important to me as any other practice, which most of my team mates unfortunately does not always agree with.
In school likewise the hockey, I strive to lead, for example through achieving the highest academic marks. Therefore I work hard with my studies and as an aspiring college athlete, I am driven to excel not only athletically, but also academically. Hockey is my passion, however, I want a stable career after playing hockey. I also would love to be in a position to help others after I graduate, that is why I have a desire to learn more about the human body and how it functions.
My long term aspiration within the academic is to get at Bachelors degree in Health and Exercise Science.
I am open to all options and want to ultimately find the right college match with the highest level of competition possible. I am greatly determined to make the next huge step in my hockey career by achieving my dream of playing hockey at the collegiate level and study at the same time. It would truly be a blessing to continue to play hockey, all the while receiving a great education.
