Personal Statement
Hi, I’m Mallory Stuart and I’m a defenseman for my Varsity hockey team at Mt. Ararat High School and my Tier II girls club team, Casco Bay Mariners . I started playing hockey in 6th grade for my middle school team after have never been on hockey skates before. The next year I played for my middle school team as well as a tier IV team where I received MVP during a March tournament. I tried out for a club team again in 8th grade and have been playing for the Casco Bay Mariners girls Tier II team since then. During my time on this team we’ve been able to win multiple state championships, go undefeated at the New England regional tournament, and go to nationals twice. At our most recent Regional and National Tournament I was apart of one of our two power play lines. I never would have imagined playing at this level in 6th or 7th grade but I’ve worked hard, persevered, and through my love of the game have accomplished so much. I’m always looking to improve and prevent mistakes I’ve made. I like to think I’m self-aware and can notice right away what I did wrong that may have led to an opposing team scoring, but many times I come off the ice and ask coach right away what I could’ve done instead as they can definitely see things on the ice that I might’ve missed. Many of my coaches have said I’m very coachable and I think that’s super important in continuing to improve as a player and what has helped me improve so much in such little time.
I started playing Varsity hockey my freshman year and have been on the starting line and the power play line since. I’ve felt that I’ve been an important addition to my high school team but I have not been a prominent goal scorer until my junior year (I don’t have the exact stats for my first two years). As a defenseman, I was the second top goal scorer (about 16 goals) and the second top point leader on my team (about 24 points) in 19 games. For my senior year I have the privilege of being a team Captain.
Academically speaking, I’m always looking to challenge myself, but never let challenges get in the way of success. Each year I continue to enroll in harder classes as I’m always looking to grow and learn. For me, a challenging class that keeps me thinking is the best way to learn and keep me engaged. For my senior year I am taking three AP classes. In order to have room in my schedule for these classes I took a course over the summer. I want to continue to challenge myself my senior year to prepare myself for college and keep myself engaged in class.
