Hi coaches, my name is Laura Melizza and I’m a 2024 graduating goalie.
I have been interested in hockey since I watched my first in person AHL game at the age of three. I started to play hockey when I turned five and have continued every year since. When I was eight, I played a game as goalie and the puck never left our end. Many goals were scored but when I got off the ice, I was so excited about how many pucks I had stopped. This is where my love of being a goalie started. When I was nine I became a fulltime goalie but at Sunday skills sessions I would practice as a player to continue to learn more about the game as a whole before going to the goalie specific skates. My goal was to play at the highest level of play that was available in our area. Throughout my career I have achieved this goal by playing on the AA team in my area and then once I was old enough, the AAA city team. My college hockey goal is to play at the highest level of hockey available to me so that I can improve my skills as a player and learn more about the theory of the game.
Prior to high school, I played all the school sports available to me including basketball, volleyball, badminton and track and field. Outside of school I played soccer, softball, and hockey. Once I started high school, I specialized in softball and hockey.
School is very important to me, and I work hard in classes to achieve good grades. My academic goal for college is to get a degree in engineering. I have tutored younger students and currently help my peers during class. A school extracurricular that I participate in is Musical Theatre. I am part of the backstage crew where I get to practice my leadership, communication, and creative skills by creating the sets and keeping everyone organized and on task. During production week, I ensure that we have every prop and set piece at the theatre we perform in and keep the props organized and accounted for during the show.
I am an NCCP Certified level 2 hockey coach and I coach younger goalies. I would like to continue coaching once I have finished playing. One of my goals in college hockey is to learn how to coach higher level hockey from the college coaches. During the hockey season I work as a timekeeper and it helps me to keep up with the rule changes in the game.
I am a very motivated person with a strong work ethic and am hopeful that you will consider me for a position on your team.
