Hello, my name is Gabbi Oakes. I am a 2006 and currently finishing my freshman year of high school. I currently plan on graduating from high school with the class of 2024. Simply put, I love playing hockey. I have played (and do play) other sports, but hockey has always been my focus sport. I have spent most of the past seven years both playing and, more importantly, developing my hockey skills and abilities. I am always trying to improve my play through both in-season and off-season development-focused skills sessions. I believe that there is always room for improvement and that it will take constant effort and hard work to become the best player that I can be.
While hockey is my passion, I am also aware that education is just as important. I put an immense amount of effort into my honors-level study and make every effort to ensure that I stay on top of my classwork. I believe that the key to success, either in the classroom or on the ice, is solely based on effort. I love being a positive role model and making people smile. On a team, I make sure to pick everyone up and to create a fun, happy, and safe environment where everyone feels like a part of the team. I am a physical player who can pressure the puck on either the forecheck or backcheck and embraces the challenge of digging the puck out of the corners. I have above-average speed and the ability to create space and separation and I can score. I have developed my overall aggressive playing style while playing on both boys’ (checking) and girls’ teams.
My goals, as they relate to hockey, are to focus on the continued development of my skills, to improve, and to strive to get better every day. There is always room for improvement. I have put an immense amount of time and effort into hockey. Ultimately, I am looking to put myself into a position where I can continue my playing career after high school. I am a flexible and cooperative person and I’m open to working for anything that comes my way. I believe that I can have a positive, team-focused impact on any team, in any environment, and I am more than willing to put in the work to make that happen.
