I started learning how to skate with my identical twin, Caitlin, at two years old. My first few years of learning to play hockey were on boys’ teams. At age 8-10, we were invited to play with a girls' 14U Tier 3 team. Even though we were several years younger, the coaches took an interest in us due to our skating ability, height, and desire to learn the game.
The following year, we needed to search for a new team due to age-related restrictions. We joined a coed team and were dominant players due to size and experience playing at a higher level. At 12U, we had grown as players by dedicating more time on skill development in addition to team activities. As a result, we were able to make a competitive, a coed A/AA travel team for both 12U seasons.
At the start my second 12U season, I was given the opportunity to become a defenseman. I worked hard to learn the position and attentively listened to my coach’s advice. I was frequently asked me to switch between forward and defense positions to cover for players who were absent. Toward the end of the season, I was on the ice for most power plays and penalty kills.
At 14U, we were invited to try out for Belle Tire in Detroit, Michigan (two hours from home). Although my parents were apprehensive about driving that far, they wanted to support our desire to compete at a higher level. We were asked to join the team after the first tryout. Next season, it will be my fourth year playing at Belle Tire.
My dad, my sister and I work out together at the gym and have recently started playing together at men’s' hockey pickup leagues. I have gained additional knowledge of the game by becoming a referee four years ago. I have gained determination, confidence, close friendships through hockey. I hope to continue to play the sport while attending college.
