Personal Statement
Hello, I am Samantha Reyes. I am currently a junior at Xavier College Preparatory. I have been rowing for three years this upcoming fall season. I started rowing freshman year of Highschool, eager to learn a sport I have never tried before. I started not knowing what a 2k or 5k was. Through my rowing experience, I have rowed in eights, fours, quads, doubles, and singles. Before rowing, I participated in sports like softball, volleyball, swim, and competitive dancing. These sports evoked my passion for competition, strength, and perseverance. I was ready for a more challenging task, so I decided on rowing. The impacts that rowing has had in my life are skills and lessons I will use in my future to grow as an athlete. From pushing myself, growing in strength and endurance, and learning how my body works under pressure. Any faults or struggles on the water pushes me to work harder and fix my mistakes. The influence I have taken from my coaches and teammates have taught me how to work with others and use criticism to my advantage. They have taught me the importance of learning, observing, and teaching. My coaches have taught me that focus and hard work are crucial to becoming a rower. My older teammates have taught me how to watch others and check my techniques to help myself, while my younger teammates let me lead them and appreciate my advice. With support from my coaches and teammates, I have a family I can count on. I knew I would love the sport from the thrill of being on the water, and the adrenaline rush from racing with competitors. Rowing has exposed many opportunities to me that I never imagined. Attending a preparatory school, academics are very important to me. Rowing in college is something I have dreamed about since freshman year, I am more than honored to be able to have the opportunity to apply. Thank you for taking interest in my application and for considering me.
