Personal Statement

When I was a freshman in high school I went through an extreme medical emergency that caused me to miss many months of school. I decided that from there on out if I was going to get healthier I would become as strong as I possibly could. My body had been through so much that I knew I could handle the intensity of rowing. Starting off joining mid spring in April Freshman year about 40lbs underweight I knew I needed to make an extreme change to become faster. My competitive drive was thriving off seeing my name go from the bottom of our 2k PR spreadsheet to towards the top.  Since I started rowing at the definition of "out of shape," I was so weak, and I have no idea how fast I can get, and I cannot wait to find out. The community from my rowing team has helped me so much to keep pushing myself and having so much fun with my new friends off the water. I have learned so much from rowing and it has completely changed my life in the best way ever. I want to pursue rowing in college so I can reach my full potential and keep falling in love with the sport every day.

Awards and Activities

  • ActivitiesI wrote a book called "Raise Your Hand," to encourage young girls to be more confident in class and to not be shy asking questions and using their voices. The book started with a Patch for young Girl Scouts to earn to push them to raise their hands in class and recruit other girls to raise their hands as well. The patch came with a coloring sheet and a pledge that they will Raise Their Hands in school. I was interviewed on various platforms including Good Morning America and the Ellen show; my book became a best seller on Amazon and was even translated into Chinese. I have changed the diagnostic standard care plan for Appendicitis in Children's Hospital in Washington DC. I am also working on expanding the diagnostic changes of standard care for Sepsis, partnering with Lulus law, and Dr. Prashant Mahajan who works at the University of Michigan to change this basic care, so that especially children do not end up hospitalized with sepsis, suffering from a ruptured appendix. I wrote an Opinionated Piece for CNN.com, which has expanded to many other sites, warning families and children about the dangers of Appendicitis and how quickly it can lead to Sepsis. My OP ed came with a TV interview on CNN where Sanjay Gupta an American neurosurgeon interviewed me about the trauma I faced when my voice was not listened to when I was hospitalized for months due to an appendicitis case that could've been caught and solved quickly. I will continue to advocate for children going through medical traumas, and young girls so they grow up knowing the dangers of not having agency to advocate for themselves. I am currently working on a second advocacy book to help children how to express their pain while in a hospital and how they can have their voices heard. My Girl Scout troop and I have created a Period website for our Silver Award to educate young girls about their bodies in an interactive way, so they do not grow up feeling ashamed of their periods. The website was a success and the comedian Amy Schumer is partnering with my troop to include Tampax (the feminine hygiene company) in our troops website to spread the word about period comfortably and education. Inspired by "Raise Your Hand," my troop and I led a Girl Scout expo encouraging girl confidence and over 300 young girls from around the DMV came and participated in fun and interactive activities to help find their agency, confidence, and voices. I run an affinity group for my school called the "Acute and Chronic Illness Affinity" to unite students who have underwent major injuries, or medical traumas and discuss the struggles and how doctors make many mistakes. Our club/affinity raises money for St. Judes Children hospital by making petitions, hosting bake sales, and event days. The event days we invite anyone willing to come and have activity circles and educational presentations about the silenced voices of children in hospital care. This summer I will be an intern at Rosie Farms Sanctuary where I will be working with rescued farm animals and taking care of them.
