I began rowing in 7th grade after playing on a competitive travel volleyball team since age 9. This switch came after a learn to row summer camp at which I feel in love with the sport of rowing. I used the competitive drive and strong sense of teamwork I had learned in volleyball to push myself in rowing. In my 8th grade year, I was moved up to the high school varsity squad and was a successful rower until deciding to switch to coxing in my sophomore year. I didn’t think I could love the sport any more than I already did but it happened once I became a coxswain. I feel that starting my rowing career as a rower gives me a unique perspective as a coxswain. I understand what my rowers are going through, when and how to push them, and have a strong understanding of technique. Because of the size of my team, I still row occasionally and do all the workouts. As a coxswain, teammate, and team captain, I feel like my strengths are commitment, confidence, strategy, and management. Because of these qualities, my teammates and coaches know they can trust and depend on me. Outside of rowing, I am passionate about science, student government, and American Sign Language. In college, I hope to combine all of my passions to pursue my dream of coxing for a competitive collegiate rowing team, studying biology with a focus on genetics, and continuing to become fluent in American Sign Language. I am excited to find my next rowing “family” and contribute to the success of the team and program!
