After I dock my last boat as a coxswain, as much as I love competing and winning at the highest levels, I do not need to look back and see a big trophy to feel I’ve accomplished my goals. My focus is much more on process than results.
I’d like to feel really sad that I no longer get to compete with my teammates, and for my coach and school. I want to feel proud that as a team we left it all on the water. I certainly do not want to feel any regret, wishing that I had worked harder. If we get beat by a faster boat, I don't want it to be because they outworked us at practice or in the weight room.
As a coxswain, my goal is to get my rowers to conclude their careers feeling the same way I want to feel. No regrets, a feeling that we competed for something more than just ourselves, that we accomplished more as a group than any of us could have done individually, and wanting more. If I look back and see a career that made my teammates and I feel these things, I will have accomplished my goals.
